Hi Hannah--
1) Make sure that you download the latest version of Itunes.
2) Unplug your ipod from the USB (or firewire) plug and replug it
in--sometimes that helps.
3) I also saw this the other day on a pc: the ipod wasn't recognized when
it had been earlier in the day despite the latest version of Itunes (which
by the way includes Ipod software) because filter values had installed in
the registry. It's well known that filter values can block the use of
burning software or DVD drives showing up, but until this I didn't know they
can block the Ipod from showing up and this might well be your problem.
4) Rarely and I mean rarely an Ipod won't show up because it's not working,
but the odds are slim and none that's your situation.
It takes a minute to fix--basically you go to a registry value and delete
either upper or lower filter values or both if they are present. After
that, (if that's your problem) the Ipod should show up fine when you plug it
in and you can sync the new tunes you add to your ipod.
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in
the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type
your password, or click Continue.
2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned
in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry
subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To
verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the
Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
If filter values are present in the reg at that location, then deleting them
will do the trick.
How to Backup Your Registry in 15 seconds:
For this I don't back up the registry, but if you want to it's the fastest
backup in Windows:
On the registry toolbar:
File>Export>Put the radio button on the dialogue box on the lower left onto
"All">save to desktop and then put it into any folder you like.
Good luck,
CH
