Added security will always slow down processes. In a recent demonstration,
an unpatched XP SP1 was breached in 11 minutes. There are more than a few
running unpatched systems because they have been told by a family expert
that patches are crap. I have asked a few local clients who have followed
similar advice whether they think that it was the smart thing to do as their
computer is now locked in a boot loop from which there is no escape other
than to start over completely.
Vista security attempts to address the above, and it is for your own good
ultimately. UAC can be turned off, and I have mine turned off, but their are
security issues in doing so. Are you smart enough to be able to spot bad
stuff before it gets you? If you are, then turn UAC off. If not, leave it
running.
Re slow file transfer, Vista indexes files when it moves them around,
something that XP never did. The benefit of indexing is super fast searches.
Vista does not have to search an entire disk looking for files as XP did. it
checks its own index, hence the search gives immediate results.
MS developers are no doubt trying to find a way to make indexing faster,
which will in turn speed up file transfers. If you have a fully patched
system, it will have been addressed in part already, but it is still work in
progress and MS are aware of this.
You are free to go back to XP at any time, but XP is old now and, in time,
Vista will be streets ahead on all counts. You have to appreciate that these
things are more apparent in the wild than they are on the 'few' machine
configurations used in testing. There is also the problem of delivering the
fixes to users so as not to screw up the system. Most of the time, they do a
pretty good job, but there will always be an element of collateral damage.
