My mouse locks up when I switch user accounts

When I switch between user accounts my mouse locks up. If I unplug the mouse
from the USB port, the mouse unfreezes and can be used normally until I
switch users again. Any suggestions?

Look for applications that load for different users. Check Device Manager
and
Delete USB Mouse and reboot. May have to do same for each user. Could one
user have installed a mouse utility that other user did not?

If its an HP laptop this is caused by the HPQWMIEX.EXE service
If you disable this service from MSCONFIG or from the usual Service
tab, the problem goes away.
ps - HP Support had not got a clue what I even meant let alone how t
fix it. They insisted I do a factory restore on the customer pc - eve
tho I work in a shop and could demonstrate the problem on the four bran
new laptops I had in the shop

Never had that happen. I have had issues with log on/off locking out my
keyboard though and the fix was to turn off the fancy wlecome screen and
use the old style log in screen where you have to type your usename and
password instead of just password.

I also have the same problem. I have a brand new HP Pavilion 988
notebook with vista home edition. The mouse locks already in the accoun
overview window. In the taskmanager services I can't find HPQWMIEX.EXE
I got the same answer from HP to reboot completely. Thank you for you
help

Ditto - brand new HP Pavillion 6910. The mouse locked up right out of
the box after I'd set up another user - hadn't installed or modified
anything else, so restoring to factory settings wouldn't have done
anything. Thanks to Ian's post, this is now fixed. But it took me
awhile b/c I'm new to Vista, so here are the exact steps, for anybody
else who has this issue:

1. you must be logged in as an administrator
2. go to Control Panel --> change to Classic View (for total non
vistaheads) --> Administrative Tools
3. Double click Services
4. Scroll down to find hpqwmiex and double click
5. From the Startup Type dropdown, select Disabled.
6. Under Service Status, click Stop.
7. Exit out of everything.

But - still didn't fix the problem until I restarted the computer. Now
it works fine.

I first complained nearly a year ago to HP; after numerous reinstall
of drivers, they told me it was an MS bug that would be fixed in the SP
Surprise! No fix. Now, I finally googled the right words and foun
this. Disable, reboot, try again. This time, a momentary disconnect
but by the time the screen with the user icons comes back up, the mous
is working properly

No one has mentioned it that I noticed, but this problem is also wit
the keyboard. In fact, the USB ports seem to go dead until you unplu
all usb items, wait a bit, and plug them back in. Unless, of course
you kill this bloody useless service! :
