My sound has disappeared.

Suddenly, for no reason at all, the sound on my computer has disappeared.

For example: if I try to play an audio file in Windows Media Player it comes
up with the following error report:

'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be
functioning properly.'

When I ask for more information it comes up with the following:

'C00D11BA: Cannot play the file'

I have no access to volume control and the computer is telling me I have no
audio device. I've tried searchin for an updated driver like one of the
options suggests but I just get told it can't find one.

As someone who doesn't have much of a clue on this stuff can anyone help me?

Depending upon what OS you're using - have you tried a system restore?
I had a problem with the audio device this morning and fixed it by doing a system
restore.

I am getting the same message on my computer. I tried restoring like you
said but that didn't work. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks

I had exactly the same problem and I fixed it this way:
1.-Click the start icon on Windows XP
2.-Open the control panel.
3.-Click the listen, sound and voice section.
4.-Click the listen and sound devices.
5.- Click the hardware.
6.- Click the C-Media AC97 audio device. There you can read that this device
doesn't work properly and need reinstallation. You click the reinstall
option. Finish.

My sound has disappeared as well. I hve searched for the driver that everyone
is speaking of, to remove it, but it is not installed on my computer. I am
speaking of the C-Media AC97. This driver is not installed so what else
could be causing the problem? I run XP.
