Windows XP Home - SP2 - IE 7.0
I studied the overview and other introductory material related to
SP3. One comment completely confused me:
"SP3 is for x86 systems; SP2 is all that is needed for x64".

Using Belarc Advisor, I tried to find out if I have x86 or x64, but
was not successful.

Please tell me how to find out whether or not I have x86. Thank you.

Click Start>Run then type "winmsd.exe" (without quotes) and then "OK"

Where you see the details on the right look for System Type. You should be
able to find it there.

The probability you are running XP Home for a x64 system is extremely
unlikely. Actually it probably doesn't exist. Probably 99% of the XP systems
out there are x86 [32-bit].

Belarc is useful in some cases but misleading in others [example: says your
are missing security updates but you know they aren't needed].

A x64 system would have a folder called "Program Files (x86)" and a folder
called "Program Files" for the x64 programs.

On to SP3. You need probably 1.5 GB of free space on your C drive. You
should temporarily disable any anti-virus, anti-malware and any other
software that checks for stuff like that.

If possible exit out of anything that is running.

There is a issue with [primarily] HP systems and AMD processors [a sticker
for a brand name computer will probably say AMD or Intel in front of the
system].

Do check to make sure the next time you visit the Windows Update page that
you have successfully installed this Windows Update KB936357 if you have a P5
based processor. Assuming you have a P5 processor AND have not successfully
downloaded this update then DO NOT download and install SP3 or you will get a
Blue Screen Crash.
