My Operating System is Windows Vista Home Premium, and my update is installed.
My youngest son in law, Max, who has much more knowledge and patience than
me, installed the Microsoft.net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 update last
night on my computer and then installed the Security Update that became
available after the Service Pack was installed.
How did he do it? He found the "Install" folder in my
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, and the Service Pack file was in the
Install folder looking back at us. Then he manually installed the file by
DOUBLE CLICKING on it.
I lost count yesterday on how many times I checked the SoftwareDistribution
folder for an Install folder, but apparently each time I checked it was after
I had tried to "install" the Service Pack from Windows Update and the Service
Pack file was not available anymore on my computer. By the way, my
ReportingEvents.log under SoftwareDistribution and my Windows Update History
shows NINE failed attempts to install the Service Pack before Max found the
file and installed it.
So my advice is to FIRST look in your SoftwareDistribution folder for the
Install folder. If it is NOT there, go back to Windows Update and try again
to install the Service Pack, then go back and look in your
SoftwareDistribution folder -- betcha it's there this time. Then all you
have to do is double click on the file in the Install folder and follow the
instructions (I forget, but there's a few things like "Accept" and "OK"), and
you are ready to check for updates again. This time you'll see the Security
Update for the Service Pack, which may or may not install from Windows
Update. If it DOES NOT INSTALL, go through the same routine as you did to
get the Install folder to appear under your SoftwareDistribution folder and
manually install it.
Good Luck. I sure slept better last night knowing my computer was up to
date and not going to "crash" today. :-)
