I have two computers, a desktop and a laptop, running XP Pro and Home,
SP2. I have Windows Update set to notify me when updates are
available. A couple of days ago, the shield appeared in the system
tray to inform me of an update to Internet Explorer. I didn't record
the number. I told WU to download the update. It appeared to be
downloading for a short while, then the shield disappeared. Nothing
else happened. No message saying it had been downloaded, or asking for
it to be installed. The same on both machines.

Has the update been downloaded. Has it been installed? I can't find it
in Add/Remove Programs, there is no $NTUninstall folder newer than
$NTServicePackUninstall in my Windows folder.

What should normally happen when WU is set for notifications only?
When I click Download, does that only download the update, or does it
get installed automatically as well?

Hi

In the security bulletin for the update, it is documented what to
look for to see if the update installed successfully.

See the "Verifying Update Installation" section under
"General Information" \ "Security Update Information" \
"Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP Service Pack 2" at

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-038.mspx

There you will also see that Microsoft recommends using "Microsoft
Baseline Security Analyzer" (MBSA) to see if updates are installed
or not.

More about MBSA here:
