My updates won't install

I'm using XP Home SP2, and for some reason when I try to update via Windows
Update website, the updates won't install. I get a "Done" when they're
through downloading, but then I get a "Failed" when it comes to the
installation part.

It doesn't say why it's failed though.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Apparently you *are* a rookie if you don't know how to reply to a post.

Will your suggestions/direction work as well in Windows ME ?
I have (I don't know how many times) tried to install IE Security Updates
from Windows Update but Every Time...I get the 'failed' message, even after I
disable Virus Software, Firewall, PopUp, all programs in msconfig except
Explorer and SysTray, and System Restore...i.e. No Open Programs are running
in background.

Hi,

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en

Note that a side effect of renaming or deleting the SoftwareDistribution
folder is that you lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

(later on, you can just delete the renamed SoftwareDistribution
folder)

Sorry but I am confused! What is the WU v5 History listing ? Excuse my
ignorance.
Also, why would I want to delete the renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder?
All I wanted to do is update my microsoft installations. Is there an easier
way of doing this without the consequence of coming up with failed updates?

Thanks

That is what you see if you go to the Windows Update web site and
select "View Installation History" (or something like that). If you
delete the SoftwareDistribution, this listing will be empty (until
you install some new updates).

To regain the disk space that it occupies, nothing else really.

After you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder, a new one will
automatically be created, and you will not have any use of the
old, renamed one.

Deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder can solve your Windows
Update problem, but then again, it might not. But it is worth a try.
