Mystery hardware clash causes bluescreens

My computer has taken to bluescreening fairly regularly and I can't figure
out why.
The bluescreen message is saying there is a problem with hardware or a
driver and Windows reckons its a problem with ram, power supply, main board
or cpu.
I'm running:
Vista home premium 64 bit
AMD Athalon 4600+ dual core processor (64-bit)
Alabtron Nvidia Geforce 8800 gpu
2gb ram
MSI mainboard with Nvidia 550 chipset
550W power supply

I've tested the power supply, graphics card and ram by swapping them out
with other parts known to work. With the power supply I've upgraded it twice,
and no dice.
I've lost count of the number of times I've gone back to scratch and
formatted C and re-installed windows, but again, no luck.
The bluescreens seem fairly random, but seem to prefer times when I'm
running video, either from the DVD or direct from the hard disk.
It has been suggested that I need to turn down the DMA setting from Ultra
DMA to just plain old DMA, but I can't find how to do that (it seems you can
either just have it on or off) and I can't see how that fixes bluescreens
when running video from the hard disk.
I've also tried updating drivers for the chipset and GPU (I've also last
night had to wind back the gpu driver to 100.65 to resolve what seems to be a
fairly common problem with the monitor not working).
None of this seems to make any difference. I'll also point out again that
while the bluescreen seems to like video files, it can and does come at any
time. The only time it's never turned up is when I'm installing Windows.
Does this sound familiar to anyone. Any suggestions?

Alex,

You didn't mention anything about the BIOS settings for timing, such as
frequency settings for RAM, FSB, CPU, etc. Everything set to specifications?

Nothing overclocked and using the latest bios from MSI. I can't remember the
ver. number, but it was put out last month.
The vid card is a gts.
If you're right about the ram ML de Zeeuw, then I might be better off just
replacing the board! Thanks.

Normally I would agree this was a cheap RAM problem but you swapped i
and there was no difference. You should run SANDRA to find out wha
exactly your memory is doing

your PSU looks beefy enough, but just to be sure please can you look a
the label on your power supply for the 12V current rating. there ar
probably 2 12V lines so you may have to add together. 8800GTS recommend
26Amps at 12

we haven't mentioned overheating - i assume you've monitore
temperatures - next time it crashes quickly look at pc health in th
BIOS - you have some hot part

and it would be nice to see the stop code you get on the BSOD if ther
is one

i doubt motherboard is the problem but it is possible

good luc
