Narrator Problem when reading documents

It appears that Narrator reads all the icons, titles, etc but when I try to
read document or website text using the insert keys I meet nothing but
silence!

I have tried placing the cursor at the beginning of the text, highliting and
selecting it and everything else I can think of with no effect. Obviously
it's not a sound card or speaker problem or it wouldn't be calling all the
icons out!

Anybody else have this problem? Am I missing something obvious?
