Need advice re: Microsoft Works 6 updates/downloads

I have always had our computer set to automatically download Microsoft
Updates, but for some reason our Microsoft Works 6 has never updated
automatically and we've had our hp PC since 2003.
I need instructed as to the order I need to download previous versions of
Works,if any,to get to my goal of using the most current version.
When it comes to computers, I consider myself somewhat knowledgable but what
pc knowledge I have is hands-on/self-taught. I can not take a chance on
screwing up any of my existing Works 6 documents. I have SO many important
home and work related documents in my Works 6, that when I update, it is
imperative that, I still be able to access all of them. Therefore, my
question is .......................
Do I need to download Works 7, then 8 and then 9 OR can I go straight to
Works 9-download it- and not have problems/issues accessing any/all the files
on our pc currently in my Works 6?
