need advice on WMP

Vista SP2: Windows Media Player has begun to attempt to configure its
network business every few minutes despite my trying to thwart it by
blacklisting in Spyware Terminator and blocking it with my firewall. I get
alerts every five minutes that C:\Program Files\Windows Media
Player\wmpnscfg.exe wants to install or perform some function. I have
disabled every WMP category in Services.

I sometimes use WMP for playing music and watching small videos on occasion
but have no interest in any type of networking on- or off-line. So I tried
to delete that file and the whole program, rename that file, and even
force-uninstall WMP altogether with Cleanse uninstaller but all I get is a
window telling me I do not have permission. I tried changing permission
settings but couldn't get them to work either. WMP does not appear in the
Windows Programs and Features list so I cannot even try to uninstall it
there.

What do I need to do to either shut down any networking functions of WMP or
get rid of it altogether? It never did this before today (I scanned it and
no virus reported).

Thanks,

Frog

I don't know, but once you get rid of it try using VLC instead. Simple,
lightweight, open source, and doesn't have spywarish behaviors, so it
won't quietly tattle on all those infringing mp3s and avis you have.

Thanks Katie. I have used VLC on my desktop with XP and it is good. WMP came
with this laptop and worked well enough before this current nonsense began.

Infringe? Who, ME? ;-)
