They are all gone!! Once you use the recovery disk all files are wiped from
the drive.

You can't. When you used that restore disc, you returned your
computer to the same as it was when you took it out of the box.

If you have to do that again, backup all other files you want to keep
BEFORE doing it.

Better yet, buy an external hard drive and keep those files backed up
to it at all times.

In most cases, using the recovery disk will format the C: drive (remove
everything that was there) and lay down an image of the way the computer was
shipped to you -IOW - an out of box condition.

If you haven't backed up your personal files to another source (CD, DVD,
external drive, thumb drive etc.) your files are gone.

Sorry to tell you but companies like Dell that give you a "recovery
disk" couldn't have picked a worse name to describe what using it
does.

It will RESTORE your system to how it was...brand new out of the box.
That means likely any personal files you had are toast, unless you
made backups and put them on some non system partition, external
drive, burned to a DVD, etc..

You KNOW that won't work (at least I'd hope that you know)!

The software Carey suggested might work, at least for some, however if
this ever happens again do NOT use the recovery disk, instead consider
your choices.

1. Try and repair the missing file(s). The biggest worry here is that if
you don't know why they went missing in the first place you may be
seeing a virus or hard disk failure.

2. Take the machine to a reputable service place - usually NOT a big
store but a local place.

3. Remove the drive from the machine. Buy another drive. Use the
recovery Disk on the new drive, using same name(s) and password(s) as
before. Put in the old drive as slave. Copy your valuable stuff from the
old drive to the new drive. That way you have two copies in case the old
drive was failing and comes to a screeching halt in the near future.
Losing BootMgr would not have removed all the data from the old drive.

My guess is that some combination of 2 and 3 would be the best as a
reputable store could give you here and now advice.

I assume you are talking about the Bootmgr file.
How did you delete it ?
I have UAC turned off and I can't delete it, I get a Destination Folder Access Denied message.
So how did it get deleted ?
..

Why ? (Unless of course that piece doesn't work well.) It may work to
retrieve a lot of the users data, if they haven't used the PC much since.
And that is the key, it should not be used.

If the restore replaces everything onto the HD the way it came originally,
and it most likely will be pretty close, the user's files are still on the
HD.

A HD can be 'unformatted', not 100%, but if you can get back 60%-80% of
your data, it's worth a shot.
