Need and XP search engine for Vista

All I want to do is search by date or type of software. Actually I am
searching for a recently created word file. All any search engine does
now is find a program when you know its name. If you know a programs
name you generally know were it is so Vista's search engine is
useless. Lets make it clear it doesn't even do that. On my H drive I
have a file named Zahainya when I asked Vista to search my H drive for
a file named Zahainya it comes up empty. Moreover Vista admits it
searches slowly because it asked if it can index my files every time
and I say yes and still the search is at least 5X slower then XP and
it can't find anything anyway.

You use Advanced search, point it to the <H> drive and check mark enable
"Search for system and non-indexed files, otherwise, the search is only
going to look in indexed file locations. If <H> is not indexed or the
location on H where the file is located is not indexed, then it's not
finding anything.

Also you can goto the Control Panel/Folder Option/Search tab to further
refine the search.

There is also some free 3rd party search software that can be installed
that people like. But I don't need it.

Windows key/F-key will get you to Advanced Search.

Open "Folder Options", under the Search Tab in the heading "How to search".
Check the box next to "Use natural language search".
If I were you I would index those drives. Past that you may want to check
other boxes in the Folder Options Search tab.

If looking for a file name type cmd in Start - Run then type into cmd

dir c:\filename.doc /a /s

which will search C: drive fast.

Vista's search interface is one of the worst features. "What could
they have been thinking" doesn't begin to cover it.

Install Agent Ransack. It's freeware (although there is an upgrade
version if you are a search fanatic):

After the install, you can disable the Windows Search Indexer service
and stop wasting time composing indexes to feed the Vista Search
beast.

I did say I can search for files if I know their name bu that's not a real
searech function. No where do you say how I can search for text.

Nothing changed when I did that. There is nothing that says I can search by
text string.
