Vista's search interface is one of the worst features. "What could
they have been thinking" doesn't begin to cover it.
Install Agent Ransack. It's freeware (although there is an upgrade
version if you are a search fanatic):

After the install, you can disable the Windows Search Indexer service
and stop wasting time composing indexes to feed the Vista Search
beast.
