A little touchy, aren't we?
Especially considering the problem is 'your friends' and not yours?
All I am saying is logical. Why ask what is going ot happen when you could
just do it and see what happens. Sooner or later that has to happen either
way. And after it does - your friend will know what happens.
It's not like you are asking "what happens if my friend boots up with a wipe
CD and wipes the system?", your asking what happens when he chooses one well
worded option instead of another. ("Restart" or "Install updates and
Shutdown".)
If it does not say "Install the updates and restart", then choosing
"Restart" will not install the updates. If it says "Install the updates and
shutdown" - then (with patience) the updates will be installed and the
system will shutdown afterwards. If it says "Shutdown", then the updates
will not be installed and the system will shutdown. If it is giving the
choice of "install the updates", then Windows XP has not acknowledged the
updates have been installed and until it does acknowledge it - (or your
friend changes the way they have chosen to receive updates) - it will
continue to have those options at shutdown.
Your friend may THINK they installed updates - and maybe they did and the
'switch' to let the shutdown message know was not flipped. Maybe they did
not and visiting the
http://windowsupdates.microsoft.com/ page will show
them what updates they still can install. But the fact is - no one can tell
you for sure but your friend when they actually try to do it.
Sorry you think my logical approach is me being on some 'high-horse'.
