This may be OT - if so sorry.

In my playing with Vista Ultimate, I have encountered a problem trying
to play some avi and mov files, using WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC
(mplayerc.exe).

I keep getting an error window, saying I probably need certain codecs
that I do not have installed. Is there an easy way to determine
exactly what codecs are needed? That is, is there a utility that will
diagnose that information so that I can then seek it or them on the
web? I have tried downloading a few so-called 'codec packs', but
apparently none have had the needed codec(s), and the problem
persists.

Thanks

Thanks

I downloaded Gspot and executed it, but I don't know how to use it. Is
there a set of instructions anywhere?

Open gspot, also open the folder where your file is.
Pull the file onto the gspot window, and render it.

http://k-lite-codec-pack.en.softonic.com/

I've been using these for years, first in XP and now Vista. Every file I
have is playable after installing this.
