"Mandoman",
That was a great post, Taurarian! I'd like to add something, though.
Can your father's computer at least SCAN for updates? This way, you can do
the following:
1. On your father's computer, go to the Windows Update website and scan for
updates.
2. You will be presented with whatever number of critical updates that
Windows Update has identified.
3. Go to the Review and Install updates.
4. Use notepad, or some other text editor, and copy the KB number and title
of every CRITICAL update he needs.
For example: "Q323172: Security Update (Windows 98)"
5. Mail the list to your Windows XP box, or print out this list.
6. Go to your DSL-enabled Windows XP box.
7. Go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
8. Do NOT scan for updates, but instead, in the left-hand pane, click
Administrator options
9. Look for a link called: "Windows Update Catalog" and click on it.
10. Click the button for "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating
systems"
11. Once there, ensure that the language is English (presume this is
correct), then from list click on the "Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second
Edition"
12. Click on the Advanced search options
13. Under the "Update types," uncheck all of them except the following two:
a. Critical Updates and Service Packs
b. Advanced Security Updates
14. Click Search
15. Click Critical Updates and Service Packs (I found 73 currently)
16. Once this large list is displayed, run through the list you created in
step 4 above, and click Add on any matches.
17. Create a directory to download these updates
18. Download these updates to that directory.
19. At this point, burn them onto CD-R or copy them to some other technology
that will be recognized by Windows 98.
20. Copy these updates to the hard drive of your target computer.
21. Install the updates one at a time.
Let us know how this goes!
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
