Hi.
I have a friend that has dial-up internet. It takes him many hours to
download updates from MS. I wanted to download all recent updates on my
computer with high-speed internet and burn them to CD. How do I do it?
The Windows update page has no prowisions to download the files for
later install. Microsoft should concider this addition to their update
site. Not everyone has high-speed internet as yet.
Thanks.

A.

Try the catalog -

Download individual updates from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you want, Click
the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the location where you want the
updates saved to and then Click the "Download Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog or from the Microsoft
Update Catalog

First - the ability to download indivual updates to save for later - been
around a LONG time.

Each month Microsoft puts out tthat months patches in an ISO format for
burning to CD:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086 (Back to 2006)

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-may.mspx

January 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-jan.mspx

April 2008's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms08-apr.mspx

Third party tool to do the work for you:
http://wud.jcarle.com/

Second - just get your friend SP3 - download and burn the ISO image of the
CD to CD...
To be SAFE - you may also want to download a copy of SP2. With SP2 and
SP3 - no matter what version of the Windows XP CD your friend uses (other
than x64) - you should be able to update them through April 2008 fairly
quickly. (If your friend has SP1a or above installed already - straight
from the start - just put on SP3. If not - install SP2, reboot, install
SP3.)

SP3 ISO Image:

SP2 Executable:

Good luck!

Your starting point is to get Windows XP SP3 and Microsoft Office 2003 SP3
(I don't use Office 2007) because these two service packs contain all the
patches up to a certain date. I think Windows SP3 contain all the patches
upto 14th April 2008 but this is just my gut feeling.

Next there aren't any critical or hotfixes for Windows XP system in May
2008 unless you are using Microsoft's Malicious Removal tool.

For office 2003, You will need to go to Office 2003 website and look for
any updates since SP3 was issued.

Hope this helps.

Can anyone confirm this? That is, if I have WinXP SP3 on CD, I don't need
SP1 or SP2 any more?

No. If your original Windows XP media is Windows XP RTM (no service pack) then
you need either SP1 or SP2 in order to install SP3. SP2 is preferred.
