Hi,
It would be normal for a hard drive to spin up when the system is first
turned on. Anything being used has to be loaded to ram from the hard drive,
and it certainly can't do that without spinning up.
Incidentally, by disabling superfetch and indexing, you are causing your
system to work harder to achieve the same results. Searches will take
longer, and commonly used files will not be preloaded for quick retrieval.
Those routines are designed to speed the system's response based on the
user's pattern of regular use.
Did you disable or limit virtual memory as well? That would contribute to
additional spin time, especially if the amount of physically installed ram
is low.
Writing to $logfile is normal.
