I am able to download KB898461 to PC but execute fails. I have renamed
SoftwareDistribution folder and attempted in Safe Mode and still fails.
Receive messages "An error occurred while copying file spmsg.dll. Cannot
copy file to destination directory" and a Setup error notification that
states "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".
The error code 0x8007007B is associated with the failure to install.
Installation was partially installed and appears to have greatly reduced the
speed and functionality of the PC. Any ideas on how to resolve?

Please post the KB898461.log that is located in the WINDOWS directory
(folder).
Is it downloading via Automatic Updates or from either the
Windows/Microsoft Update sites ?

The first 'real' error is:

>> 17.703: GetTargetExists: GetFileAttributesEx(
>> c:\windows\system32\preinstall\winse\wxp_x86_0409_ v1\updspapi.dll.ref )
>> failed (1117)

This is what really puzzles me :

>> 7.109: CreateUninstall = 0,Directory = C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB898461$

It should read " 1,Directory " not 0

Let's try this. Delete *all* contents of your User Account's Temp folder
by moving the CONTENTS, not the folder, to the Recycle Bin for now.

C:\Documents and Settings\<UserAccountName>\Local Settings\Temp

Then stop the Automatic Update service by going to Start >Run >type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK

Navigate to the SoftwareDistribution folder and open the
DataStore folder. Open the Logs folder and delete ALL contents of it.
Go back to the DataStore folder and delete the DataStore.edb

Back to the SoftwareDistribution folder and delete the contents of the
Download folder

Delete the *renamed* SoftwareDistribution folder that you renamed in
your first post

Now go back to Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK

Delete the manually downloaded KB898461.
Temporarily disable the installed AV
If there is a 3rd party firewall being used, temp disable it and use the
Windows XP SP2 one for now.

Download KB898461 from here and save it the Desktop :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Close the browser.
MOVE WindowsXP-KB898461-x86-ENU.exe to the root drive,
C:\

Go to Start > Run > click the Browse button
Point to C:\WindowsXP-KB898461-x86-ENU.exe
Click Open, then OK

If it fails again, post the *last* section of the KB898461.log *only*,
please.

Is this XP Pro or Home ? Is it a multiprocessor system ?

Aha ... I've suspected that file in
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs by the name of
edb.chk might be the cause of the issue. It's a file which stores
recovered file fragments from running a scan (check disk).
Thanks for confirming that the scan needed to be run.
Now ... just what is that file doing in there ?

Mow wrong. edb.chk is a checkpoint. Even though hovering the cursor over
it shows ' Recovered File Fragment ', it's not.
That's what I get for believing 'balloons'
