i need help to remote desktop over the internet to my home pc

i can connect with my laptop to my desktop at home over the network (i use my
computer name to connect) but when i go away when i try to connect to my
computer (using my pc's IP)from off the network.... say from college, it
connects to another computer on the same network as mine. is there any way to
get my laptop to connect to my pc instead of this other networked pc, aside
from unplugging the other pc?

Sounds like you are trying to connect remotely using a local IP address.

You need to forward TCP Port 3389 in your router to your desktop machine.
Then you find out your external IP address by going to www.whatismyip.com.

Then you connect with that IP address remotely. You can get a free hostname
at www.no-ip.com to make things easier, especially if you have a dynamic IP.

Oh, if you meant that you get connected to another computer on your *home*
network, you need to make a registry edit to make your computer use another
port for Remote Desktop, and then forward that port from the router to that
PC.

thanks alot. yes the problem is that i am connecting to another pc on my
home network. how do i "make a registry edit"?

This is for XP, but it probably the same location in Vista. I cannot check
at the moment.

Change the port to 3390 on your computer, for example.

Then forward TCP Port 3390 from your router to your computer's internal IP
address.

Then you can connect remotely to your computer, but you need to now add the
non-default port into the address field in the RDP Client:

e.g Address: 86.142.36.52

Type in address field - "86.142.36.52:3390"

or "www:myhostname.com:3390"

If you get a hostname from no-ip.com you can actually have names fixed to
particular ports.
