Need MVP interpretation of BITSAdmin log for failed update download

My XP Pro SP1 PC is behind a Dlink router and never failed to download
Windows update(s) until it was updated for Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) V2(KB883357) early September.

Now, although "scanning for update" takes place OK, any attempt at
downloading a proposed update failed.

After installing BITSAdmin from the full Windows XP CD (in tools) , I ran

"bitsadmin /list /allusers /verbose"

as soon as the new download window opened stating that updates are being
downloaded. Here is the verbose recorded.

Could an MVP member be kind enough to interpret/decode it for me ?

Alain,

According to the KB article you refer to you did this :

" Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Reg.exe ADD
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestor e\FilesNotToBackup /v
BITS_metadata /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\*" /f "

by installing the the update from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883357
or you did it manually BECAUSE :

" In some cases, this malformed value causes your backup program to fail
or to inaccurately interpret the file path to exclude from your backup."

Correct ?
Could you successfully update prior to installing the above ?
I don't pretend that I can interpert the BITS log, but
>> STATE: SUSPENDED

could indicate that either the Automatic Update or BITS Service
are not in the correct state. To manually update you MUST have Automatic
Update set to Automatic and BITS set to at least Manual .

Thanks MowGreen,

I may not have done anything with the registry :-( and just downloaded
WindowsXP-KB883357-x86-enu.exe package and installed it manually because,
although WU told me to download it, I couldn't not. After reading on the
windowsupdate group, I just want ahead and downloaded it.

I was alway able to update before with v4. Due to a 2 month trip in
June-Julywithout, no update was attempted until early Stember when I was
faced with the impossibility to get WindowsXP-KB883357-x86-enu.exe package
through WU.

I will look into the REG_MULTI_SZ as you say and re-read KB883357
line-by-line :-)

Thanks again.

Just tried the command you suggested. I get a "too many parameters" reply.

Is this command to be on a single line before I press return ?

MowGreen, I need to bug you again:

I am looking at the data value of registry sub-key: "BITS_metadata".
In your reply you show it as:

"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\*" /f "

I count 3 double quotes that is an un-even number. Is there a quote
missing?

Also, the KB883357 article talks of:
"...two NULL characters at the end of the value data.."

I don't see any NULL characters in my registry data string for
BITS_metadata but I don't understand the: /f " in the Reg.exe ADD
command of your reply.

Where are the two NULL characters? Am I suppose to have two "blank" at the
end of the value data in the registry?

KB883357 appears to be intended for those who are having an issue
with their backup program after installing KB842773 .

The registry key in my previous post was copied from
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883357
This is what the update wrote to the registry so there is no need
for you to do it manually. The extra quote on the end was added by
me to indicate that I'd copied it from the KB article. There should
be NO quote on the end, thus, there is just 2 of them. The 2 NULL
characters come right after f, there is no trailing quote . Thus,
it looks like this

Reg.exe ADD
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestor e\FilesNotToBackup
/v BITS_metadata /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\*" /f

The formatting of this will change in this post. To see the correct
data of the key, go to the KB article.

Did you check the status of Automatic Updates and BITS ?
IF you're not experiencing issues with your backup program that this
update is not needed for your system. Advise you to uninstall it via
Add/Remove Programs, check the status of AU and BITS to confirm
they're in the proper state to be able to update.

Yes. Use reg add /? to get help with the syntax.

My guess would be that you are including that extraneous trailing
doublequote which I think was only meant to bracket the entire extract.
E.g. starting with "Click Start and ending with /f " with a few odd
spaces added to try to indicate that the enclosing quote was not part
of the syntax.

Sorry MowGreen, I did get mixed up between the two KB (883357 and 842773)

I checked the binary value of BITS_metada. It does have to NULL (00 00) at
the end.
I checked that Kb842773 (BITS v2 and WinHTTP 5.1) is installed.
I checked the status of Automatic update and BITS using services.msc They
both were running Automatic update startup was on automatic and I had to
switch BITS from Auto to Manual.

I re-tried WU. The PC scan took place, in the list of updates available, I
selected an update for Outlook Express. The download window opened but
download failed with the same error as before:

Installation Failure

Error Code: 8024402C

In fact no installation took place. The failure was the download not the
installation.

You said:
> IF you're not experiencing issues with your backup program that this
> update is not needed for your system. Advise you to uninstall it via
> Add/Remove Programs, check the status of AU and BITS to confirm they're
> in the proper state to be able to update.

I guess you mean the BITS v2 update KB 842773 ? I did un-install it,
rebooted and checked AU and BITS state.
I tied again WU. Now following the PC scan, I get the page tell me to
update to the latest Window update, that is "I am back to square one" as
the page has no option to refuse this update (there is ONLY an install
button) and to be able to look at other updates that WU had selected for
my system.

So .... I'm a bit disapointed for the least. I wish the error code:
8024402C was documented on MS KB. It must correspond to a specific
situation. Why is it not decoded somewhere?

Thanks again MowGreen .... :-((

Thanks Sudheer,

I did do what relates to 8024402C error but I remember looking at a
similar fix before.

The KB article states:
"The 0x8024402C or 0x8024502D error codes typically occur because an
incorrect character exists in the proxy override settings"

This is fine, but, I don't use a proxy. I still went through the motions
listed excepted some didn't make sense such as:

|Open Internet Explorer.
|On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
|Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.
Comment===> the Advance button is only availale if you selected Use a
proxy server for your LAN Comment===> but I don't have a proxy server so
no advance option.
|Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.

My PC is behind a D-Link router on a home LAN (IP of the type:
192.168.xxx.xxx) connected to a cable modem.
Everything else works like a charm. WU stopped working on the two XP PC's
in September the day MS WU server required that I download Windows update
latest version.

The download failed, so I got the 842773 BITS update from MS and installed
manually. This in turn allowed my PC to , at least, display the list of
updates vailable for my system i.e. SP2 and other updates.

Selecting an update open the "Update are being downloaded and installed"
window but NO download takes place and the window close the transfert
process. Error is always 80224402C

Thanks Alain
