I need permission?

I have Vista home premium with SP1. When I sE it up, I chose not to
pay attention to the suggestion that I create a USER account. I'm the
only person who touches this computer, so I prefer not to have to type
a password to start it all. My account is OWNER.
Looking in help files etc., it seems to me that I should therefor have
complete authority to do things that only an administrator is allowed
to do, but I sometimes get messages that "permission is needed."

I'm the owner, I'm the admisistrator, I'm the only one who touches it.
Who do I go to to meekly ask if I can do something?

Thanks

Apparently being the Administrator in Vista is like being a User in XP.
All in the name of 'security'. To stop the constant nagging I have turned
off UAC
permanently on my setup but you may not wish to do that.
It depends really on how competent you feel about your computing skills!

Hi, Myron,

If you are talking about User Account Control,
You can turn it off in the Control panel (classic view)
Double click User Accounts and you will see - Turn User Account Control on
or Off.
When the next window opens, remove the check in the box by clicking it.

To stop being notified of a security alert, go to the control panel again
and double click Security Center,
and click Change the way Security Center alerts me.
Select the line you want.

Good luck
Jerry

My first impulse was to give a sarcastic reply, since I was already in
that condition, i.e., my UAC was already off, and I had the way I was
alerted to let me know, which I want.
I guess I need to ask a different question. Instead of "how do I get
supreme power," it should be, "Now that I am nearly omnipitent, how do
I use my awesome power to do something that my minion (i.e., Vista)
tells me I can't do without permission?

hopeful thanks

use the 'real' admin account, which is disabled by default.

It looks like you already have a possible answer from other posters. I'll
state the obvious that when the UAC is turned off and more workarounds are in
place to prevents prompts, you system is more vulnerable to attack.

Just like everything thinks they are a good driver, everyone thinks they
are "careful" and won't get malware. However, if the zero day exploits in
Flash and attacks via ads served by third parties in trusted websites and
poisoned DNS aren't enough to scare you, then you have a high opinion of your
third party protections.

I've never had a good explaination of what people do that causes these
prompts and why they are so intrusive. The only time I get them is to run
programs with deep drivers like CoreTemp or Probe2 or backup/image software.
I get a prompt that says Windows needs my permission and I give it. No harm,
no foul. The alternative is Disneyland for all programs and processes.

Just my $.02

Myron,
This is due to another peculiar part of Vista. You will have to assume
ownership of the file. If you know how to do that, fine. If not, ask.

Another funny part to Vista. You will have to take ownership of that file.
