This file is apparently making my computer get mixed signals internally and
it's been damaged, most likely from a trojan or worm that snuck through
somehow, despite internet protection software. Please include a link to the
location for replacing this essential file for autoupdates. I've been
searching for about an hour and a half and cannot spend any more time looking
for it. I'm just going back to the same places on the update page and no
place for this files is shown. It's too frustrating and prehaps someone has
already been through this same thing and knows where it is. Thanks!

I've been searching for a way to resolve this issue for three weeks now and still cannot find any firm answers. I'm this close to a resolution, but pulled up short by one article. I wanted to have the .cab file mentioned in 836986 just a bookmark away just in case I need it after doing the steps to correct the problem.

Oddly they, the archive, have the cab file available to download.

When I typed regsvr/u C:\WINNT\System32\IUCTL.dll into the Run dialog box, this was unable to be found because iuctl.dll didn't exist according to the system. I've been in the regedit recently and found it in there, it just doesn't work. It's listed as damaged. Should I still try to install the .cab file anyway?

Wouldn't it defeat the purpose of installing the new file in the first place. What about the old ones that were still in the regedit that were damaged? Should they have been deleted?

Regedit doens't "contain" anything. It's just references. You should
probably re-register it.

But not with regsvr ; o (Haven't actually seen that used since Win3x.)

BTW since no OS has been disclosed yet but we are discussing iuctl.dll
I think it should be mentioned that this implies Win9X or WUv4 are
probable factors in the incident or the (undisclosed) problem symptom
that is being fixed is the ability to visit the Windows Update Catalog? Etc.

Then other symptoms began showing up. The annoying little box that asked if I wanted to connect or work offline was (and still is btw) popping up as soon as any one of the four of use who use this computer logs on. By re-register, please clarify. Thanks!
