Need to run CHKDSK

Were trying to back up C: (Vista) but it complains that there is an error on
the disk and advises to run CHKDSK. If I do this with the normal system
running, I'm told I don't have sufficient rights to continue even though I'm
logged in as an administrator. If I try running it in safemode, Vista
tells me there is some other process using the disk. Can someone tell me
how to cope with this? TIA

Right-click Command Prompt (Start/All Programs/Accessories) and "Run as
Administrator" enter the command in that window and it should work,

It still says things such as "can't lock drive because some other process is
using it."
How can I find out what process? Scheduling CHKDSK to run after a reboot
doesn't
help, even in safe mode.

If you enter Y (for Yes) and Enter when it asks if you want to run at
reboot - it doesn't?

Perhaps you need to narrow the parameters. In the aforesaid CMD window
enter
chkdsk C: /r (with the spaces and assuming that it is C that you are
checking) then click Enter.
When asked to do it at next boot enter Y and hit Enter.
Reboot.

It won't do C: like that because the operating system itself has the drive
locked. That being said, follow the instructions that Peter provided and see
what happens.

I did. And, I just repeated his process. Again, Vista claims some other
process is using the disk. My question stands: How can I find out which
process? Or, how can I bring up a very abbreviated system that doesn't
have lots of services etc running that might be getting in the way?

Hi Stubby

If you cannot get chkdsk to run at startup, then try this

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/13...rtup-vista.htm

Once you do that, then see if you use one of these methods to ru
chkdsk

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67...isk-chkdsk.htm

There will always be something preventing it running until next boot. Are
you typing in Y when it asks if you want to run at next boot and then
clicking Enter and immediately rebooting?
There's no need to know what process it is.

When you instruct chkdsk to run at the next boot there will not be any
processes running to interfere with chkdsk.

You can not run chkdsk with the /f option from within Windows. Chkdsk can
NOT work with an active operating system (if you are trying to check the O/S
partition).

Make certain you initiate chkdsk from an elevated command prompt (ie: with
administrator privileges).
