I keep getting the Update" Icon saying my updates are ready to install. I
can not install or download these updates. Please help, because this has
been going on every day for quite a while. Thank you.

The same thing is happening to me and it's driving me crazy. I keep clicking
the update and it says it is installed. Then a few seconds later the notice
comes up asking me to update again. According to the Microsoft Update page I
have instatlled (KB920872) about 20 times. What is going on?

Marie,

The issue you're experiencing has a solution and was posted by
Eric Brodish, MS. First, check to see if KB920872 is listed in
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. If it's not, go to the end of
this post for removal instructions:

This has been attributed to OEM manufacturers who have imaged the
kmixer.sys, wdmaud.sys and splitter.sys drivers as unsigned.
Update.exe will treat these drivers as OEM drivers and not overwrite them.

1. Download the update from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...n&Hash=7LFJN64
and save it to the C: \ drive (or whichever is the root drive,i.e. the
drive where WINDOWS is installed)

2. Click on Start > Run

3. Type C:\WindowsXP-KB920872-x86-ENU.exe /o and click OK
(once again, C:\ being the root drive)

If the update had installed previously with loss of sound and it is not
listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, then show hidden
files, folders, and system files.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial62.html

Navigate to the WINDOWS directory (folder)
Locate the $NtUninstallKB920872$ folder and open it
Open the spuninst folder and run spuninst.exe
This will uninstall KB920872
Restart the system

You're welcome, Maria. Just make sure that you follow the steps exactly
as they're laid out and everything will be just fine

If you followed *all* of the steps that were laid out then the update
should have installed. What's happening ... is the update listed in
Add/Remove Programs, are you being prompted to reinstall it constantly,
is there an issue with sound ? Please be specific so that someone can
assist you.

By the looks of the other thread that you had posted to, there is an
issue with Registry Mechanic or NAV and it's affected the Operating
System. Strongly suggest you defragment and then run sfc/ scannow.

How to defragement
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848

How to run sfc/ scannow
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

There may also be the strong possibility that NAV has damaged Windows
Script Host OR, there very well may be malware causing the issue.
When was the last time the system was scanned for ad|spyware, trojans,
worms, viruses, etc ? Depending on the version of NAV installed, it may
only be scanning for viruses and trojans.
