hi,
yesterday i installed the files that were downloaded automatically from
windows update service and i restarted my laptop (windows vista premium)...
the huge problem is that after i restarted it and logged on, the destkop was
black and nothing appeared on it, just blackness...and the only thing that
opened automatically was my documents...the wierd thing about it is that from
my documents which opened automatically i can work on my laptop as if nothing
is wrong with it, i can access all my programs including the internet...
i tried system restore but i guess it failed because even after i did it the
desktop was still BLACK and my documents opened automatically!
so any helpS:???
thanks!

Uninstall the updates. Restart. If this solves your problem, reinstall one
at a time, testing as you go, until you find the culprit.
For future reference, do not automatically install updates. Choose the
option to "automatically download and let me choose..."

Choose the option to Notify you when updates are ready to be downloaded!
And don't download hardware drivers from MS updates.
Go to the manufacturer's website for them.

You can try using an earlier restore point. There is an option on the
screen to show more restore points. What happens if you go into Task
Manager and start another explorer.exe in the new task in applications?

Not sure what you mean by mistake. I did say start 'another' which means in
addition to the current one. :-) There is no real way to tell if YOU will
have a problem. If you download and don't install, then watch the group to
see if others are having a problem with a particular update, you just don't
install that one. If it is peculiar to your particular setup (hardware and
software combination) then you have no way to tell and will have to
uninstall or system restore.
