This information is provided "as is", if you dont like my posts, TOUGH,
Go on to another post but dont whine.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1290

Microsoft is providing free phone support for Windows Vista Service Pack
(SP) 1 users — whether they get their SP1 from Microsoft or via a PC
maker or other retailer — through March 2009.

There’s got to be a catch, right?

Surprisingly, the caveats are relatively minor. The help is specifically
for SP1 installation and compatibility issues. And the offer stands
through March 18, 2009.

According to M3 Sweatt, the Chief of Staff for Windows Core Operating
System Division (COSD), the offer of free SP1 help is not unprecedented.
Microsoft has provided free support for previous Windows service pack
installations.

thanks--your post answered a question I had been musing over, namely,
would MS support OEM installs. Thanks again.

Oh, and since I installed SP1 (but I don't know if SP1 is the reason
this now works.,.), Indexing actually works now!!! I had to turn off
indexing right after I purchased my Toshiba and Gateway laptops last
spring, as Explorer couldn't find files (even in indexed folders). I
crossed my fingers after installing SP1 and reenabled Indexing, and lo
and behold, it frickin WORKS now! Gee a feature that now works as
advertised! What's next?

If I call them, will they give me XP in the same bits as I bought a machine
with Vista?

hehe. I delayed installing SP2 for XP, as I had read so many horror
stories. I finally backed up and went for it--and had NO problems. all
that sweating for nothing! I should have gone for it months earlier!

EDIT: looks like I inadvertently wiped out the subject line earlier...
