My OS is windows XP sp1 home edition, dial-up connection at 26.4 kb/s
Have all the latest critical security updates until they changed the update
site
Run an up-to-date NOD32 antivirus program along with spybot teatimer and
current spyware blaster.
My firewall is Agnitum Outpost ver 1.0.1817.1645 and when trying to get
updates i run it in the "allow most" mode

hello,
Recently I went to windows update and downloaded the new software for
updating. I tried updating and recieved the error 0x8024402C. I followed the
troubleshooting directions as best as I could.
Problems I had in troubleshooting were; one, that at the command prompt the
command "proxycfg -d" was not a valid command. Two, there was no invalid
characters in the LAN proxy exceptions box probably because I use good 'ol
dialup and I don't use a proxy when updating. (I have used proxies with
before on DIAL-UP so if I have a proxy cache and "proxycfg -d" is not a valid
command then how do I clear it? Or, do i need to since I use dial-up and not
a LAN connection???) Three, I started auto update and BITS services and set
them to automatic from the services access from administrative tools and also
stopped and restarted auto update from the cmd prompt. Event log shows that
auto update started successfully. My firewall...I just realized I could try
shutting it down completely and try updates again..but if that doesn't work i
would appreciate some new ideas.. A) why is "proxycfg -d" not a valid command
and, B)What else might be the cause of my failing to get updates (besides the
firewall, I'm tring that right now)

I have cookies enabled and medium security settings in my browser. I am not
on a network. I am not updating many computers. I never had a problem getting
updates manually for the past two years.

I'm kinda put out by billion dollar companies fixing things that arn't broke
then providing inadequate support and trouble shooting directions to fix the
thing that was suposed to fix what wasn't wrong to begin with. Also, I love
updating manually and hate anything "automatic", I even hate the word itself.
automatic is for wimps.
