Cracked it. .NET Framework 2.0 won't install over .NET Framework 2.0
Beta. So I tried removing .NET Framework 2.0 Beta but it won't be
removed because "another program may be depending on it". That other
program turns out to be WinFX Beta, which I removed. Then I removed
..NET Framework 2.0 Beta and .NET Framework 2.0 then installed just fine.

And where did all this unwanted gubbins come from? I suspect it was
when I decided to try out "codename Max". When I removed "codename
Max", it obviously didn't remove the accompanying gubbins.
