Is .net 1.1 needed in addition to .net 2.0?

I am getting continuous daily failures of Windows Update trying to update
1.1 .net framework. I also have .net 2.0. Can I just delete (remove) .net 1.1
and end this nonsense?
I have looked through the KB and I don't see any successful solutions to
this problem. I have XP MCE SP2 preinstalled on a Dell Inspiron E1505.

Yes and no. Some applications may want 1.1 and some may want 2.0
