I downloaded and installed the .NET 3.5, sp1 redistributable package ( 231MB)
on a WinXP, sp3 machine and everything seemed to install ok. But when
rebooted the system hangs at Win XP screen. I can use Safe Mode ok. Tried
Restore to prior point but still hangs up on boot. Thought I might uninstall
..NET 3.5 using Control Panel uninstall - but now do not even see .NET 3.5 as
being installed. Believe I saw it as a choice before i did Restore to earlier
point - but might be mistaken.
System also has SQL Server app running when it boots - not sure if this
caused complications to .NET but am mentioning it because when I selected the
..NET 3.5 update there was also a SQL update listed in the "high priority"
update section on MS Update website. I did not install the SQL update.

More info - entered %systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework into Run command and
see that system does have "V3.5" directory - looks like it was/is installed
but not showing up in Add/Remove Programs application. Strange. Also within
the V3.5 directory there is "SQL" subdirectory. Leads me to think that I
should have installed the SQL update at same time as .NET 3.5 update - both
were listed choices in MS high priority updates.

Re-install .NET 3.5 SP1, this will add the option back into the Add/Remove
programs list.
If .NET 3.5 SP1 still gives you problems then un-install it using the
Add/Remove programs option.
Then use this cleanup tool to remove any remaining fragments of 3.5
..NET Framework Cleanup Tool:

(This tool has a pull-down list so make sure you select 3.5 from the list)
