NET Framework 1.0 Svc Pack 3 Error 643

I had successfully installed SP2 to WinXP Pro on my Dell Latitude notebook.

So from Windows Update, I selected the following 3 updates:
1) GDI+ Detection Tool
2) .NET Framework 1.0 Svc Pack 3
3) .NET Framework 1.1 Svc Pack 1

The GDI+ tool and .NET Framework 1.1 Svc Pack 1 installed OK, but the .NET
Framework 1.0 Svc Pack 3 failed with Error Code 643. I see I have company.

I tried all the suggestions in the Windows Update support page ( deleting
and recreating EDB.LOG, renaming folder CatRoot2, reregeresting cryptographic
DLLs, ad nauseum ). None of this worked.

Next I tried a manual download and install of the service pack 3, but this
failed when neither setup nor I could not locate the Netfx.msi installer.

What a mess. And MS wonders why folks are hesitant to automate the
installation of critical fixes. It's much more fun to watch the smoke and
flames in person :-)

Seriously, I installed these 3 updates on another XP Pro system without a
hitch, so I know it can be done. So...how do I back up and restart this
update? Does Windows Update create Restore Points after each successful
install by any chance?

Thanks for any help--feel free to email me directly after removing NOSPAM:

Regards,
Eric

There is a new update "NET Framework Svc Pack 2" (notice, there is no
version) 6.4M replacing the ".NET Framework 1.0 Svc Pack 3" and it fixed the
problem for me.

I found a clue to the solution in the following file on my system:

\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\repair.ht m

It says: "You may need to repair your installation of the .NET Framework
after upgrading your operating system or if the system becomes corrupted".
It then goes on to say that you need to use "dotnetfx.exe" to restore the
..NET Framework 1.0 to a previous state.

To obtain this file, first download the ".NET Framework 1.0 Redistributal"
code from:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframewo...s/default.aspx

This downloads a self-extracting file named "dotnetredist.exe". Click on it
to obtain the "dotnetfx.exe" file. Next, from a command line prompt, change
to the directory containing "dotnetfx.exe" and enter:

dotnetfx.exe /t:%temp% /c:"msiexec.exe /fvecms %temp%\netfx.msi"

Note that the quotes are required after the /c: switch. When the installer
is done, invoke Windows Update and select the Service Pack 3 for reinstall.
It should now complete and mark the update as Installed.

Eric Webb
