I used the Manufacturerers Utility to restore my PC to factory defaults. I
then reinstalled Antivirus (McAfee Internet Security). Vista gave me a
message that .net framework 1.1 must be installed. I am not sure now wether
I have a problem with system files or if I really need to install framework.
I was under the impression that .net framework was already installed in
Vista and that the most current version of .net framework includes all prior
versions? Can anyone clarify this for me?

No, there are specific 'redistributables" for each version.

the Net framework 1.1 goes side by side with the newer ones (that vista
has), so you will need to install it, but you have to install the net
framework 1.1 service pack right after you install
it.. because on vista it NEEDS the service pack in order for it to work
properly.. so you have
2 downloads and 2 installs to do>>>>>

Get the 2 downloads here

service pack (install after you install the above) here

If I were you, I would install .Net 1.1 Framework on the machine. A .NET
application/solution is developed against a particular version of the .Net
Framework, and the application may not have been updated to fully work
against a later version of the .Net Framework. That's why one can install
different versions of .Net Framework on the machine, because of
compatibility issues.
