Hello
I received the subject thru auto updates today and would like to ask the
question: who should download this(200+mb)update? I.E., does this update have
any security implications or any other benifets for the non developer? Thanks

An update for the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959209

The issues that this update fixes:
The update for the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 fixes the issues that are
described in the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
958481 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958481/ ) List of the issues that
are addressed by the Application Compatibility Update for the .NET Framework
2.0 Service Pack 2
958483 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958483/ ) List of the issues that
are addressed by the Application Compatibility Update for the .NET Framework
3.0 Service Pack 2
958484 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958484/ ) List of the issues that
are addressed by the Application Compatibility Update for the .NET Framework
3.5 Service Pack 1

It would appears that these "Application Compatibility Updates" apply
equally for "Developers" and "Non-Developers"

I am still wondering why it is classed as a "high priority" update.
Wading through the "advantages" does not clear up my question.
One claim seems to be "Programs being written will load faster" ?
(200Mb for that ??)

It should be noted that in many (most?) cases the actual amount downloaded will
probably be far less than 200MB. (Sorry I can't answer your actual question; I
have not yet formed an opinion on when it should be installed.)

Correct, Harry. The update should not install any runtimes that were
previously not installed. It includes .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, as shown
here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa718693.aspx

Next to .NET Framework 2.0 -
> .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 KB951847 8/11/2008

Clicking the KB951847 link takes one to -

List of changes and fixed issues in the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951847

So, the date on the MSDN page is wrong and the verbiage needs changing
on the KB951847 page. KB951847 includes hotfixes for .NET 2, which are
apparently in SP2.

IF one only has .NET Framework 2.0 installed then the update size will
be noticeably less than 200+MB and NO other .NET runtimes *should* be
installed.

Now, let's see if that's what will actually occur. <w>
