I live in rural MT and only have slow rural dialup. I do fine in most ways
as am used to it, however this latest NET Framework 3.5 shows up on High
Priority Update for me to download and install and says it will take 1 min.
I have been downloading it for 2 days+ now and only 1/2 way. This is insane.
I cannot keep trying to dl this and work, no less it ties up my only phone.
Why is this happening? Is the Firewall and Anti-Virus and Anti-Spy programs
interfering?

It'll take days to download via dial-up, I'm afraid. We've pinged MS about
this and the response is basically, "WYSIWYG. Deal with it."

Consider hiding this one?...

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB951847 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

=====================================

How to hide updates in Vista: Click View available updates | Right-click on
the update you wish to hide | Click Hide Update | Confirm the UAC (User
Account Control) if appropriate.

To restore/unhide updates in Vista: Start | Control Panel | System And
Maintenance (If you are using Classic View, skip this step) | Windows Update
| Restore Hidden Updates | Find and select the update you wish to install |
Restore. You can now reselect it and install through the normal process.

That implies something about the expected size, not just the quality
of the link being used.

How big? Also, it would make a big difference if you were getting
the full package or just the bits that you needed. The WU log might
show if there had been a change of plan to account for such observations.

More importantly, is anything happening?

You might find that nothing is happening because it got suspended.
E.g. in a cmd window enter:

bitsadmin /list /allusers

I once found a large download (XPsp3) suspended that way.
In order to get it going again, you just need to take its Id from
the display and construct the appropriate bitstadmin /resume
command.

Good luck
