NET. Framework installation error

I have tried to download and install Net. Framework 1.1, but I keep getting
an error message "1642:Error installing Microsoft(R).NET Framework. Could
not verify digital signature of file %s" . I also tried to install from
microsoft and got an "error code 0x66A" message --

Do you really need .NET for anything? Personally I never go near it,
anything that says it needs .NET gets binned and replaced. Nothing
wrong with .NET as such its the politics behind it and I don't quite
trust software that opens itself a hidden admin account without asking
- dunno why - paranoia maybe?
