.Net framework update fails

ERROR
SL183B.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close Installing MS.net
framework 1.1 SP1 fails to update.
How can I update .Net and is it important for security reasons?

Windows version?

XP SP2 I looked at all the links you posted...........doesn't seem to
be an easy solution

There is no easy solution, no, but what I referenced is not that difficult
either...and it works.
