Besides this message you may want to try the advice given in the post with
the subject to search for....

One solution to .NET Framework Service

Here he gives a great way to avoid the hassle I detail hereafter. If you
come across problems though I have left this general guide for you to use and
which I borrowed to finally solve my existing problems after repeated failed
attempts. This fixes the root of the problem but can involve a bit more time
than other solutions so you may want to attempt other's before a MANUAL
uninstall of your .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 (you need to remove both even if
its just one that is the problem).

Ok. Basically this is what you need to do if you've attempted to do either
of the .NET framework service pack windows updates. The problem is rooted in
the fact that when you updated to sp2 it basically corrupted your existing
..NET framework 1.0 and 1.1 if you have it installed. To do what you need to
do you have to completely remove any .NET frameworks you have and completely
reinstall from the start. One problem is if you load up ADD/REMOVE programs
and they won't uninstall do to various assorted errors you have to do a
MANUAL install. Instructions? go here.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/320112?

BTW READ THROUGH THIS URL A COUPLE TIMES BEFORE DOING THE STEPS. It requires
a good 30 mins to an hour on average. It also involves editing the registry
it does give a great step by step though. Make sure you save a backup of your
COMPLETE registry before editing just to make sure you don't mess it up
though its not too complex if you follow the links directions. Printing them
out helps greatly.

Now some of you might be able to do what eric has suggested and REPAIR it
and avoid the whole uninstall and especially the MANUAL uninstall url i've
given above. If you are getting errors with the repair which I did I
basically said ok...I need to remove it all and replace it. So this tells you
how to do that. I came to several blockades along the way such as not finding
the .MSI files and such. Basically once you have the .NET frameworks
uninstalled the next point of problem is REINSTALL. Most people will use
their auto windows update. You DON'T want to do this. Instead you want to
download the .NET FRAMEWORK 1.0 Redistributable and 1.1 and run them from
where you save them on your hard drive. I noticed that when trying to use the
windows update service or auto update it wouldn't work but doing it myself
finally got the old frameworks installed. Then when it came to getting back
to square one...the .NET Framework 1.0 SERVICE PACKS that you are failing.
You want to download those also and save them and run them from the hard
drive. I noticed they caused a problem with the automatic update service or
similar methods. If you follow that link and start from scratch everything
will go smooth. Though for the part of that link where you delete a file
called mscoree.dll. You can't remove it until you say reboot with RUN...then
use msconfig to do a selective reboot without your startup programs. This
will allow you to delete the necessary residual mscoree.dll file and also
some of the residual .NET framework redistributable. Basically if you manage
to follow the link all the way through your set but there are a few hurdles
along the way depending on your knowledge. If you have any questions
regarding this you can email me specifically and I will try to help you get
through the process. Mind you I am no expert but I spent several hours and
days attempting several methods and this is basically the problem and it's
nothing new as people have been posting individual fixes and have realized
that it is a corrupted original .NET framework because of the SP2 update.
Anyways if you go through the process of MANUAL uninstall and get hung
up...you can email me at

Please put some reference to .NET question in your subject if you email me.

Remember before you reinstall you want to make sure you have EVERYTHING from
the link I posted done and then a final normal reboot before installing
everything MANUALLY from where you have downloaded them ONTO your hard drive.
Don't use any type of auto update or you might just jinx it and have to start
over. :P

Good luck,
Jeff/Black Mischief
