net password

Hi. My problem is the following: I'm somewhere with wireless and I have the
password to conect myself. But after I've chosen the net I want to conect
myself, and after introducing the password, comes a messege saying that
either the password is wrong (I tried this in several ocasions, 90% sure that
the password was right), or that the password must have at least 8 digits, or
5 or 7, or 10 or 13 if the password is I don't know what. Must I configurate
something to tell vista what kind of password he must accepte, or is there
another problem?

If it's your network, connect to the router and look at the passcode,
cut/paste it to your computer then save it to a text file so you can
cut/paste it into the connection software.
If it is someone else's network, ask them to verify the passcode.
Many routers have you put in a number or phrase that generates a
passcode(s), but that is NOT the actual code.

The terminology is critical.

Password is a entry used to logon to an application, web site, operating system, email account etc.

Passcode or Passkey is normally an entry required to authenticate access through an security encryption(e.g. A wifi router may use a
secure encryption with a passcode/key that requires all attempting access to provide the same passcode/key)
In the abover case, the passcode/key can only be obtained from the person who configured that wifi accces point(router).

Based on the information presented in your original post, it is unclear what you are attempting to do be it logon to a
system(password) or connect to an encrypted network(passcode/key)

I'm actually in my parent's house, and I cannot conect myself to his
wireless. When I introduce the password, once is a protected conection,
always comes a messege that either the password is wrong, or has too many
digits. I tried the solution you told me and still doesn't work. We tried all
the passwords provived by the server.

You are having difficulties because:

1. You are using the wrong encryption level (WEP 64/128, WPA, WPA2, etc.);
2. And/or you have the password wrong.

Attach your laptop to the router with an ethernet cable. You should now be
on the Internet. Check. Now type the router's IP address into the browser's
addressbar and press the Enter key on your keyboard. The correct IP address
will vary from router to router, so look at the router's manual or look on
the router mftr.'s website for a manual. Examples are:

(Linksys) http://192.168.1.1
(other) http://192.168.0.1
(other) http://192.168.2.1

This will bring you to the router's log in screen. Log in with the default
password and user name (if applicable; Linksys doesn't use a user name for
ex.) OR the correct ones if your parents changed it. Again, refer to the
router manual, website, or any notes your parents took when they set up the
wireless networking.

Once you are logged into the router's configuration utility, go to the
wireless security settings and make a note of:

1. The SSID (wireless network name)
2. Encryption level
3. Encryption key or passphrase.

Now you have the correct information and can enter that into your own
wireless settings after you unplug the ethernet cable.

If you still can't figure this out with all the information you've been
given, get a knowledgeable friend or computer professional to come over and
straighten things out.

See if you can use the manufactures wireless client management tool rather
than the Vista one. Observe ASCII or Hex key entry requirement.

Go to one of your parents computers and access the router. A router is
usually defaulted to IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
so type that in the browser's address bar.
Once you have the right IP for the router, it should bring up a router login
screen, check the router's manual for the access name/password.
On Linksys, the default login name is left blank and the default p/w is
admin. Other brands vary.
In wireless security, make sure the security type is the same that you are
using on the laptop (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc) then look at the password(s) and
make sure to copy exactly, even the case of letters, then try that password.
Some routers have the option for more than one password and they are
selected by number. Make sure both the computer and router are using the
same one.
As far as the difference between a passcode/password and passphrase, the
passphrase is used to generate a passcode/password.
IF you have the same software on both systems, entering the passphrase
should generate the same passcode/password.
Otherwise, you need to enter it manually.
The passphrase will NOT work as the passcode/password.
