The following service packs are failing on alot of machine. We have roughly
350 workstations the the two patches have failed on 80 of them only. The
error code is 0x80070643.

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 SP3

My W2000 system crashed about a year ago and I have never been able to
restore the .NET function properly. Consequently all attempts to update it
fail as well.... No answer from Micorsoft... doesn't seem to be a priority.

Here is what I did to get it to work:
I'm just posting this as a possiblity for anyone else that is having a
problem with the .Net framework Security update KB886903. I've tried
everthing suggested here and nothing was working so today I took a new
approach.

1. I uninstalled .net framework 1.1 with the windows install cleanup program
mentioned before in these posts.
2. I d/l and installed the redistributable .Net framework 1.1 package.
3. I d/l and installed SP1 for .Net framework 1.1 (KB867460 is where I found
it).
>>>>>note: when I went to install this I was told it was already on my machine, I told it to go ahead and reinstall it so any corrupt files would be repaired.

4. Went back to Windows Update. I selected ONLY the .Net framework 1.1
Security patch and it worked. I did have to reboot but I got one of the 9
updates I've been unable to install to install (this one).

After my reboot I tried the other 8 updated but no such luck. I'll be
working on them later

Try a search?

Here's the answer I gave last month

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...7862dac52bd1c4

(Google Groups search for
(0x80070643 OR 80070643) (MSFT OR MVP) group:microsoft.public.windowsupdate
- sorted by date to try to capture current thinking
)

Here's one that Google Groups thinks may be important:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...a5014d500b5397

(same search ordered by relevance)

Since you are using the web interface to newsgroups
you could alternatively do the same types of search there.
That search does not support alternation, only conjunction,
so you would have to do up to 4 searches to get the equivalent
result. Also, the archive there is not as large so you would only
be able to see relatively current entries. Unfortunately the hits
are not ordered by date or relevance but the date presented
is the date of the last message in thread with all the search terms
so doing an eyeball sort on it may allow you to "capture current
thinking".

For example, here is the equivalent thread for the first Google Groups
link I gave above. Tip: doubleclicking on an entry opens a thread
in its own window at the same time it opens the list of messages.
The hits in the message list are tagged by arrow heads but you can
also just do Ctrl-f finds immediately in the the other window.

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...4-ba1680abfbba

(Web interface search for
0x80070643 MSFT
)

Also for this particular problem I can remember seeing somebody
posting a link to an MSFT blog which looked as if it might be helpful.
So that could be another search you could try.

I was finally able to resolve this after reading here. What I had on the
system was .net framework 1.1 and an additional hotfix for .net 1.1. I
deleted the hotfix using add/remove programs, restarted the system and then I
successfully applied the Service Pack 1 and then the Security Update for
Service Pack 1.
