I am getting a crapload of temp folders on my secondary file of type
\RANDOM_#\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotNetFX20
The folders have 10 .msp files in them

I cannot delete the folders at all. I can't dtermine with procesex who
has the files open. I now have 7 of these folders on my drive. how do
I get rid of them, or kill the process that is creating these?

Was .NET 2.0 SP1 installed recently ?
Is it listed as being installed in the Control Panel ?
[The exact location in CP depends upon the version of Windows]

And, what does the following mean -

> I am getting a crapload of temp folders on my secondary file of type

Secondary Hard Drive ?

I have a similar problem. A few days ago our computer (XP) apparently hung
during an update. We powered off/on the machine and it seemed to work
normally. What looks like a temporary staging directory for the updates was
left behind on the c drive. I was able to delete almost all the files except
the ASPNET files which reside in in a series of subdirectories.

C:\aaaebf5a15d5221bb742ae\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotN etFX20

Based on my windows update history, the updates seemed to have been
successful.

Also, I have a similar windows update staging directory on an external USB
hard drive which I can not delete for lack of appropriate permissions. This,
even though my user account is an administrator.

Is there an ATI display adapter and the Catalyst Control Center
installed ? If yes, close Catalyst Control Center in normal Windows mode
and see if the folders can be deleted.
If Quicken/QuickBooks or other accounting software is installed and
that's what installed .NET Framework 2.0, suggest stopping it/them from
loading on boot temporarily and see if that helps in deleting the folders.

Have you done a boot to Safe Mode and then attempted to delete the folders ?

James,

The staging area you mention should have been cleaned up when .NET
Framework 2.0 SP1 was installed. Try restarting to Safe Mode and then
attempt deleting C:\aaaebf5a15d5221bb742ae
As to the lack of Perms to delete the staging directory on the USB drive
if this is XP Home, while in booting to Safe Mode log on in the Admin
account. Then right click the WU folder and choose Properties.
Click the Security tab. Make sure that System and Administrators have
all the Permissions checked for Allow except for 'Special Permissions'.
If this is XP Pro you can access the Security tab in normal Windows mode.

No ATI display
No Catalyst Ctrl Center
No QB
No Accounting.

Plain Windows XP MCE computer. MCE disabled
Disabled
Safe Mode - still cant delete the folders

But I finally got it...I tried moving the folders - to a temp subfolder
and then I could delete them.

If no application nor program that is installed requires .NET Framework
2 in order for it to run, than you can uninstall it from Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel.
IF .NET Framework 3 is installed than do *NOT* uninstall 2.

BTW, did you move the folders while in Safe Mode ?

..Net 2 is used by Media Portal (my HTPC software)
I disabled that software, server and client, disabled MSSQL, and all
other non-core os apps. Tried the delete, mormal mode and safe mode, no
success. Rebooted, allowed normal services to start again, then tried
the move and it moved, so tried delete and it deleted.

I did not run the Vista Upgrade Advisor, and will probably never run the
advisor (or vista for that matter).

Thanks for posting this, Peter. It seems odd that the folders could not
be deleted but that they could be renamed.
Hey, as long as they're gone, that's all that really matters, right ?
