.NET update changed sign-on & welcome screen

I recently used windows update to do a cumulative update to MS.Net framework
1.1. Prior to the update, when I signed on in Windows XP pro, the process
stopped at the Welcome screen and I had to click my name. (I am the only
user and the only name on that screen).

After the update, the sign-on process goes right through the "Welcome"
screen (where it does hesitate momentarily) and then goes directly to the
Desktop. The Desktop seems to be unchanged. But I am curious why the
sign-on process changed and if there is any reason to worry about this
change. So far things seem to be normal.

I have heard of a change the opposite as you describe many times.
It should not be a problem.
If you want it back the other way:
Start/Run
Type "control userpasswords2" ENTER
Place a check by "Users must enter..."
Click OK and follow prompts.

Previously, I did not have to enter a password. I had the "Welcome" screen
and a box with my name. I simply clicked my name and the process continued
to the desktop.

Now the "Welcome" screen appears, but my name/box is no longer there and,
after a brief hesitation, the process continues to the Desktop.

It sounds like your recommendation includes entry of a password. Is my
perception correct (before I try it, I like to know what it does). That can
also be done by Control Panel/User Accounts...."change the way users log on".
My Guest account is presently turned off.

Do you think the computer now knows I'm the only user and doesn't bother to
make me click anything at the "Welcome" screen? If I turned on the Guest
account, would the computer be forced to stop at the Welcome screen?

Thanks for your reply. I always appreciate learning what is really
happening with the software! It sounds like this is a harmless change, but I
get nervous whenever a change occurs that I didn't deliberately start up
myself.

What is this new user account for? What created it?

Welcome to Windows Screen Appears When You Start Windows XP After You Install the .NET Framework
1.1 - When you install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 on a computer that is running Windows XP,
and then you start Windows, the Welcome screen appears. This screen prompts you to click your user
name to start Windows

TaurArian,

Thanks for your response. I think it explains my situation--which wasn't
really a problem, as it turns out. When I first got my computer 2 yr. ago, I
thought I saw the sign proceed through the "Welcome" to Windows screen
straight to the desktop. Then I started getting the screen where I had to
click my name, even though I was the only user. I came to thik this was
normal.

Apparently I installed the .NET framework shortly after I got the computer
and this created the Welcome screen that insisted I click my name to proceed
to Windows. For many months, I resisted putting on the service pack to .NET
framework as I didn't use Passport much, so I didn't correct the sign-on
alteration that occured due to the .NET framework installation. So my
"native" situation was actually the affected, unnatural one.

When I installed the service pack to .NET framework 1.1 (yesterday), it
altered the sign-on process to what it SHOULD have been all along!! So I
"fixed" a problem I didn't know I had and then though the normal process was
the bogus one. The MS knowledge base article made the situation clear to me.
At least I know the change in the sign-on process is not a sign of a
problematic change. In fact, I'm now back to normal.
