Net update fails

Windows update site wants to install updates to NET on my system (Windows XP
home, SP2). Each time i authorize the update, it says that its already
downloaded and attempts to install. Installation then fails.

Both Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack
1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 have this problem.

I appear to have versions 1.03, 1.14, 2.05 and version 3 installed.

1.1.4322.2032
2.0.50727.42
version 1 does not appear to have an Mscorlib.dll file (I have done a search
for it)

1. Write down what .NET Framework versions are already installed before you
go uninstalling/removing any of them!

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
