.Net update puzzle

My add/remove programs shows that .Net framework version 2 is
installed

When I do a manual WU I am advised that I can install .Net update
version 1.1 ???????

Can anyone explain that?

Two different .Net framework versions which co-exist together. Version 2 is not
an upgrade of 1.1.
