.NET various updates

I see that quite a few people have had problems with
..NET updates.

I have a Fujitsu tablet PC that runs several apps written
by them that control the tablet functionality and am concerned
about breaking them.

What's the current feeling about the .NET updates?

If Windows/Automatic Update offers you a .NET Framework update, install it,
period.

NOOOoooo, I don't think so. If I felt that way, I would
not be asking.

Perhaps I need to be more clear:

Fujitsu has written several "extensions" to XP Tablet that
were written with .NET. When .NET is not quite right, the
tablet / pointing device functions get really screwed up, as in
the pointing stick works BACKWARDS (cursor moves left
when stick is pushed right, etc.). I have already experienced
and recovered from this disaster and do not wish to go
through it again (try navigating around with a backwards
operating cursor trying to fix things - not fun).

Has Microsoft patched the patches? Some of the reports of
trouble I've read were awhile ago, and the updates may have been
fixed, but there's no way to tell.

In the Vista version of Windows Update, the release date of
the updates were available and I could avoid the newest ones
for a couple weeks so I could see what trouble they were causing.
The XP version doesn't show me the date info, so I can't do this.

Robear, fyi, there have been a number of posts in several threads here
which document one or more windows updates which disabled parts of the
tablet functionality.

Since, other than oem support, there is almost nothing out there serving
to support the tablet os when specific problems come up, many of us are
reluctant to blindly install any updates until they are validated by time.

Thanks. I was not aware of this. A cursory review of recent posts to
Windows Update newsgroup shows a dearth of posts about Tablet PCs and .NET
Framework updates...

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...coring=d&hl=en

....while the Tablet PC newsgroup shows otherwise:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...coring=d&hl=en

Perhaps OP would have been better off posting his question in
Windows.TabletPC newsgroup?

If any user has a problem they think was caused by installing an update, the
user can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

PS: Bev, I'd strongly recommend posting about this in the Private MVP
Security newsgroup, prepending the Subject of your post with [MS ESC]. I'm
sure MS and other Security MVPs would like to know about this.

PA, Bev:

Thanks for understanding. I suppose I could create a Restore
Point and endure a pointing device malfunction once again...
I got pretty good at using the stick as if I was viewing the screen
in a mirror and could probably do something simple like snag
a Restore. I was just hoping for someone else's experience in this
area. And I have no idea what else it might affect.

PS - I posted here and in Tablet from the beginning - seemed
like a logical thing to do.

There are different versions of .NET, and some folks make a mistake of
uninstalling the 1.x version in favor of 2.x. The two are independent of
each other and do different things, and one is NOT AN UPGRADE of the other.

Typical Microsoft idiocy in version naming, but the 1.x .NET version is
necessary for certain functionalities, especially with XP Pro and the Tablet
PC Edition.

Newer applications (in the XP SP2 era and Tablet PC Edition 2005, if I'm
recalling correctly) are written to .NET 2.x specifications and enablement.
Again, the two are separate, independent, and although they carry the same
name are written to by different functionalities and applications.

Good info, Chris. I had sort of verified this
the hard way when doing a clean install of Tablet
2005 to my device then running the Fujitsu Driver
Recovery CD. It autoruns a list of drivers and apps,
allowing you to pick 'n choose what you want to install.

When presented with a situation such as this, where there
are 10 - 20 drivers, etc. to install, I usually do 2 or 3 at a time
rebooting btwn. each to see how things are going. This
failed miserably because .NET 1.1 and 2.0 are the LAST things
in the Setup list and other Fujitsu extensions depend on them
to work correctly. The Setup menu was not written such that
it prevented you doing this, and of course the non-helpful msgs.
from the failing extensions ("FJMenu SetSlate failed>>OK")
were of no help at all.

If you select the entire group of stuff, and let it install, everything's
OK. You can uninstall fluff you don't need later.

That's why the issue of .NET patches is such a sore spot with me.

8-) And, even though I'm not a developer/programmer type, I've been around
enough to have heard their complaints when Microsoft opted to do version 2.x
of .NET as something totally different than 1.x. Depending on what the devs
want to do, they apparently may have to write to both versions for different
functionalities. It is a pretty sad situation, but you're using the best
method - install everything on each. The "extra" can be weeded out later
(or just ignored).

Hey 'Bear - this was cross-posted, so my response made it through to WU,
too. 8-)
