Netflix in Media Center not conecting

I have watched video from my Netflix account with MC in the past, but now I
get a blue box stating, " INTERNET CONNECTION There was a problem
retrieving data. Verify your internet connection is working and try again."
The connection is fine. I get almost 3 m/s download speed. This is with
Vista Home Premium. It did not come with the Netflix, but it was added with
updates sometime last year.

I have a valid account and can watch through a browser window. I am using
Embarq ( F Secure ) security package with a firewall and application
control. Inbound and outbound connections are allowed on everything that
looks like it might be involved with MC or Media Player. I suspected the
firewall because last night I suddenly lost outbound POP access to my Gmail
account from Windows Mail. I could receive but not send through Gmail. After
manually opening port 465 ( preferred by Gmail smtp server ) it works again.
I am assuming an F Secure automatic update may have closed the port, because
it worked fine earlier in the day. Could I have lost a port needed by
Netflix in MC?

I tried uninstalling the Netflix in WMC through the Programs in Control
Panel. Then I opened MC and clicked the Netflix button and was prompted to
download and reinstall the Netflix software as well as Silverlight. I still
get the same error.

Can you tell me what ports are needed by Netflix in WMC? Or, am I barking up
the wrong tree here?

Thanks for any ideas,
Kevin

See if the following KB article helps:-

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972496

Netflix uses port 80 and 443.

I tried opening the ports to no effect so it probably is not a firewall
issue. Nothing in the article referenced seems to apply. I did find this
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...e-b394e885256d

Several others reported the same problem. For several it "fixed" itself.
Perhaps related to updates? The only updates installed since the last
successful viewing have been Windows Defender definition updates.

Thanks,
Kevin

If you suspect the updates then you could try a System Restore. Select any
restore point when everything was fine.

I restored to 12-18 as I remember watching Netflix on 12-19. Still doesn't
work. Interestingly, after being told restore was successful, the more
recent Defender updates are still in the update history.

Restore points only save some prior system content not all.
I suggest that you try uninstalling the Defender updates and/or checking you
defender settings.

How do I uninstall Defender? It does not appear in Programs on the control
panel nor do I find it in the Windows features. It came as part of the OS
package on the computer.
