Network Adapters update for XP

So i want to upgrade my computer from Windows ME to
Windows XP Professional, however when I tried it said
that I should obtain a Windows XP compatible update for
the WAN Miniport (ATW). Can someone help me figure how to
do this and what a WAN Miniport is? I also would need to
get an update for my Lexmark Z53 printer if i want to
upgrade. I'm so confused, please help me. ~thanks
