Why? I can't get them back either by checking them in the Start Menu
Properties as they are both grayed-out or by rebooting. I still have
network & internet access and sound. Vista Ultimate SP1 x86.

You might want to check this one out. After I got my network and volum
icons back
someone claimed that he had the same problem and he solved it by
Control Panel>Classic View>Taskbar and Start Menu>Notification Are
tab> the 2 boxes are blank but NOT greyed out. He just checked them an
that's it. Want to confirm his claim

Having similar trouble guys, Taskbar and Sart Menu Properties >
Notification Area only allow me to select Clock, the other 3 options
Volume, Network and Power are greyed out. As this is on my laptop and I
use it out and about quite a bit, its bloody frustrating to say the
least. Tried everything suggested so far and nada, getting real annoyed
by this. Anybody any ideas?

Hi Warbird,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Since you tried the other methods above with no success, then it sound
like this is more your problem described in this tutorial. Select to
show all System icons.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Did you also try switching from Vista (Default) style to Classic Style
and back? I had the same problem, and it got fixed by this rather
seemingly weird solution! That's VISTA for you (& us)!!

right click on the taskbar) where available again. Now if only my Laptop
