Network & Wireless Taskbar Icons Missing, Device Manager Empty, Et

Hi,

I've install the latest Windows updates (KB900725, KB905749, KB896688,
KB890830, KB904706, KB905414, KB901017, KB899589, KB902400, KB896688) and now
I have numerous problems:

The network and wireless taskbar icons are now missing, when I go to device
manager I find it's empty, etc.

I'm running Win XP Professional with SP2, but it's not part of a domain.

I've been pointed to http://support.windows.com/kb/909444 but I don't have a
permissions tab, etc. present (as not part of a domain?). However I did run
the command line prompt commands discussed in article, but this has not
helped.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Narrowed the problem to being caused by KB905749.

I have xppro service pack 2, fat32.

After having installed all the updates, it was apparent I had problems
(specifically, I lost activex control support on the windows update page). I
could have had other problems but I spent no time looking. I immediately
deleted all and then started reinstalling one at a time. Each time I would
check to see if I had the same problem. It was when I reinstalled KB896688
that my problem started anew.

As of now I have all but KB896688 installed and I'm running without
problems. I've also tried several times to reinstall KB896688 using different
techniques, but have yet to find the one that would work.

In summary, and for my specific configuration, I've hidden KB896688 so that
it will never download to my PC.
